If you have natural hair then you KNOW that wash day can be one of the longest days in the history of man kind…
Okay, that was a major exaggeration but I’m sure you know exactly what I mean!
I have come up with a few tips on how to have an effective wash day. I’ve been “trialling and erroring” over the past few years to see what really works for my hair. I’ve been natural my whole life (apart from a 4 month or so stint in sixth form (college) to which I cut off all of my hair after trying to texturise it but that’s a story for another day).
There are a few products that are super helpful for hair growth. Keep reading to find out what they are and why they are useful!
Conditioning – first you need to start with a good conditioner. Now I know some people only do a 10 minute hair condition and it works out for them, but I condition my hair for anywhere between 45 minutes to 2 hours. This really helps to add moisture to your hair and keeps the hair nice and healthy. Healthy is hair is key when it comes to natural hair!
The Organic APH Steaming Conditioner has been great for adding strength to my hair. The best effect is when you put the cling film over your hair when you have it on, or even a plastic bag to keep in the heat. I usually condition my hair before I wash it as this prevents knots when washing those beautiful, kinky coils.
Next, you will need to wash your hair with a good shampoo. Now, I have tried an abundance of shampoos in my lifetime – more than I care for. One of the best ones that I’ve tried in the Head and Shoulders Deep Hydration with Coconut Oil. This adds so much moisture to the hair and it doesn’t strip the hair of it’s natural moisture, which is something I’ve experienced with other shampoos.
This one has 0% phosphates, paraffin, colourants. It is a good shampoo for both coloured and non-coloured hair (my hair was a mixture of both as I was growing out the brown dye I had put in it). This shampoo prevents dandruff and an itchy scalp too. What is not to love? And the smell is absolutely divine!
After I have conditioned and washed my hair, I always blow-dry it. I know people say heat isn’t good for the hair BUT I cannot leave my hair in a state without being blowdried. I tried it once and it was extremely thick and unmanageable! I could not even comb it. Now I stick to blowdrying it just to make it more manageable for me.
If you are someone who does this too, here are some products to use to protect your hair against the heat.
ORS Olive Oil Heat Protection Serum and Fantasia Argan Oil Smoothing Serum. These two productions are amazing! They really do protect your hair from heat damage – this is also dependent on how you use your blowdryer. It works best if you part your hair into small sections and then apply a generous amount of the serum to your hair. I use them interchangeably but don’t use them at the same time.
The Fantasia Argan Oil is my favourite one and it really helps with retaining length. When using these products makes sure that you pay special attention in applying it to the ends of your hair too.
We are almost at the end…
Finally, I use a trusted grease to grease my scalp and my hair.
A good grease for your scalp is a necessity! For me Blue Magic Conditioner is the best one I’ve used so far. It isn’t too thick on the scalp and it won’t require every day application. It does exactly what it says on the packaging… nourishes your hair and scalp.
I part my hair in sections and then I apply this grease to my scalp and then run it through my hair in that section. I repeat this process for my whole head. It really helps to keep your hair soft and healthy. By caring for your hair in this way, it can also promote growth. Remember when you are greasing your hair to focus on the ends too!
